The Blacksmith
We went to Philip Foster Farm Saturday for a dutch oven cook off. Evan was doing a story on the event so we all went along. The farm was a stop along the Oregon trail where there was a store, restaurant, lodging and a place for a bath.
Davis loved the barn with the activities like corn milling (you can buy dried corn cobs from the little store to run through the hand cranked machines. The first takes the corn off the cob and the second one makes it into cornmeal)playing with the tools, cutting logs with the saws, using the pulleys to lift hay bales.
The house was open for tours where the volunteers in period dress were making corn bread in the old kitchen, playing music outside and working in the blacksmith shop. Davis helped the blacksmith start a fire which he was mesmerized by.
The dutch oven winners were a bread pudding for the dessert, Boston bakes bean bread made in a tin can inside a dutch oven for the bred category and a stuffed pork roll for the entree category. The best part was that everyone there was able to taste the samples.
